FAQs

HOW ARE THESE MADE?

I use two processes to make the ceramic feeders and waterers. Slip Casting, a very old technique of reproducing from a plaster cast, and hand building. These are handmade products and will have slight imperfections and irregularities, part of what makes it beautiful!

HOW MANY DAYS OF FEED OR WATER DO THEY HOLD?

Our feeders and waterers are designed to hold 1-2 days of food or water. I believe changing water daily is an excellent preventative and keeps a healthy flock. Having just enough food for the day keeps chickens at a healthy weight and prevents rodents from chowing down at night.

CAN I USE THESE WITH APPLE CIDER VINEGAR WATER?

Yep! I test for acid resistance of my glazes to make sure. I would not anticipate any other water additive being an issue.

HOW DO I CLEAN MY WATERER?

The single piece waterer is based on the traditional vacuum design, It is both filled and cleaned through the single oversized opening. A bottle brush, soap and water is all that is needed. Limiting the opening to one allows the waterer to always keep a vacuum and not have unanticipated overflows. The waterer comes with detailed instructions for cleaning and use.

II NEED A LARGER CAPACITY WATERER, DO YOU HAVE ONE?

Not yet, but one is currently in development! Sign up for emails to stay updated on new products!

WILL CERAMIC FREEZE AND BREAK?

It is possible, I do use an outdoor friendly clay with an ideal absorption rate to help with temperature extremes. However the nature of ceramics and water freezing it is possible it could be damaged. Ideally, It would be best practice to store the feeders inside at night. For the waterers: In freezing conditions I RECOMMEND AN EXTERNAL UNIVERSAL HEATED BASE during the day and store in an above freezing location at night while the flock is roosting. *Please use caution, ceramic may not be a good fit for an extremely cold environment.

WHY SHOULD I BUY A NEW CERAMIC WATERER VS PURCHASE A VINTAGE CERAMIC WATERER?

I love everything vintage and antique myself, but something to keep in mind is most vintage and antique era white glaze contains lead. Any cracks or chips would allow that to leach into the food or water. From Scratch Stoneware feeders use LEAD FREE food safe glaze.

DO THESE HAVE A WARRANTY?

If you have an issue with your feeder or waterer, please let me know! I will do what I can to make it right. Does not include accidental damage or misuse.

HOW TO PLANT THE WILDFLOWER SEED TAG

The tag on many From Scratch Stoneware products is a biodegradable handmade (in Washington!) paper embedded with wildflower seeds. Sow no more than a 1/8" deep. Keep moist for 4-6 weeks and ensure 4 hours of sunlight. Seeds include Snapdragon, Petunia, Beardtongue, Poppy, Mint and Chamomile.
